Sarah Jane: Goodbye, Doctor.
The Doctor: Oh, it’s not goodbye.
Sarah Jane: Say it. Please. This time, say it.
The Doctor: Goodbye, my Sarah Jane.
In all of the lists of horrible, terrible, heartbreaking goodbyes on Doctor Who I think this one is often woefully forgotten. And that’s a shame because it speaks so much to the strength of the relationship between these characters that Sarah Jan can get the Doctor to do what he hates to do the most, that is, to say goodbye.
It’s so real, so authentic, and so gripping.
And what’s worse is that it breaks us because it echoes all of the times we never got to say goodbye to someone we loved, all of the losses we’ve had that took us by surprise. And it gives these characters the chance to do what we never could.
